Identity
What Is Identity Anchoring? A Plain Answer, From the Woman Who Coined It.
Identity Anchoring™ is the neuroscience-based methodology behind everything I do. Here is the plain, no-jargon definition, the five stages, and why it works when so much leadership development doesn't.
Identity Anchoring™ is the methodology I built to change leadership at the level where it actually lives, identity, not behaviour. It is a neuroscience-based approach that rewires who a leader is under pressure, rather than adding another set of skills or scripts to perform on top of who they already are. It runs across five stages: Awareness, Anchor, Embody, Integrate, and Expand. That is the short version.
I get asked this question more than any other, usually by someone who has just watched a video or read a post and wants the plain definition before they spend an hour understanding the framework underneath it. Fair enough. Here is the rest of it.
Why identity, and not skills
The leaders I work with are not short on skill. Most of them are exceptionally good at their jobs, credentialled, experienced, trusted with real responsibility. What they are short on is a leadership identity that holds under pressure without the performance overhead. They have learned to succeed by performing a version of themselves they think is expected, and it works, until it does not. Skills-based development cannot fix that, because it is not a skills problem. It teaches a leader what to do. It never touches who they are being while they do it. Two weeks after the workshop, the old pattern reasserts itself, because nobody moved the identity underneath the behaviour.
I built this out of thirty years in the CEO chair and my own doctoral research across government departments, not out of a workshop I once attended. I watched the pattern up close, in myself and in leaders I sat across from, long before I had language for it.
The five stages, briefly
Awareness is where it starts. Before anything can change, a leader has to see the pattern that has been running the show, usually for years, usually invisible to them. Anchor is where we root the leader back into their actual identity, the values and voice and convictions that were always there, not a new one manufactured for the occasion. Embody moves the work into the body and the voice, so presence stops being something rehearsed and becomes something automatic. Integrate aligns the calendar, the team, and the decisions with the identity now anchored, so the behaviours that used to feel expensive, the hard conversation, the boundary, the delegation, stop costing so much. Expand is where it compounds, bigger opportunities, a public voice, a team and a culture shaped by an identity that no longer needs to prove itself.
Identity is a practice, not an event. One anchored action changes nothing on its own. Five stages, worked properly, change everything.
This is not coaching in the traditional sense
I want to be precise about what this is not. It is not affirmations. It is not a mindset hack or a script for how to sound more confident in a meeting. Every leader I work with completes the EBW Business EQ Assessment first, a behavioural diagnostic benchmarked against more than five thousand senior leaders globally, because identity work without data drifts into the unmeasurable, and data without identity work is just a sheet of metrics that tells you what is breaking without telling you how to rebuild it. The two together are what make this durable, rather than another two-week improvement that fades.
Why it matters right now
Here is the part that has changed in the last two years. AI now produces a competent strategy deck, financial model, or board paper faster and cheaper than most teams can. The part of leadership that used to differentiate a leader, the analysis, the argument, the framework, is being commodified in real time. What is left, the one thing that cannot be automated, is the capacity to walk into a room and actually hold it. That capacity is not a skill you can bolt on. It is identity. Which is exactly why this work is not a nice-to-have anymore. It is the last real edge a leader has.
If you have read this far and you are still not entirely sure whether this is coaching, therapy, or something else entirely, that is a fair place to land. It is none of those, exactly. It is the thing that sits underneath all of them, the identity a leader is operating from when nobody is watching how they are performing it.
